The development is a 5 storey annex that is linked to the east side of the main campus building by open balcony corridors and common staircases. One of the main objectives in the annex design was to preserve the character of the existing courtyard and three sided loggia abutting the available site area. It was decided to raise the new building one floor to permit the ground level to remain open and extend the existing courtyard below the new facilities. This would provide a new covered shaded area adjacent to the open court for a range of outdoor activities as well as allowing natural ventilation into the contained open areas and balconies.
